Meet the Team

  • Carl Dawson

My rugby journey started at school when it was allowed to be played in PE one random term a year, and I loved it.

Was asked to go play as a kid but still had the fantasy I could play football, which soon disappeared! I finally got myself down to Gosport & Fareham in my early 20s, which was a great introduction to rugby. And with an on off career due to work commitments and injuries, I managed to pull on the Blue and Gold shirt for the 1s on a number of occasions.

Having played in the London South West 2 league. I had my final run out for Gos in 2023 against Guernsey St Jacques playing for the 2s. I moved to Spain in September 2023, where I carried on coaching the U6s & U8s that I had started in Gosport. I soon ended up with the S16s, which I am still coaching now.

Also dusted my boots off this season for my return at Barbarians Marina Alta in Denia. I came up with the idea of Rugby TTL back in March 2024 after seeing rugby in Spain and the gap of coverage in the Tier 2 nations and Grassroots Rugby. This started with the podcast and has steadily grown to where we are today! And there are no plans to slow down on growing the game, where we can!

I was introduced to the game by my grandparents, with some of my fondest memories being watching the 6 nations with them when I was a kid, a tradition we maintain to this day.

This developed into a life long passion for the game. While I’ve loved turning out for a few games for the Portsmouth RFC veterans in recent years, due to having feet for hands and an ankle that wouldn’t look out of place on an elephant, I have always been more of a spectator than a player.

I’m glad to say I’ve been able to pass this love of the game onto the next generation of my family, as I often take my sons on Rugby days out with family and friends, in particular to Bristol to watch the Mighty Bears!

I was an average at best player at school and college, making up for lack of talent with size and brute force. Spent a lifetime being riddled with injuries, operations on both knees in childhood forced me to sidelines and that's what I blame for the lack of international call ups.

I stayed a fan and always watched when I could, mainly international games, until about 4 years ago when my love for the game was rekindled and interest in the domestic game aligning with the birth of my son and my ambition for him to play one day! Luckily he has taken to it like a duck to water and loves Rugby training days, Currently playing at Portsmouth RFC, aswell as days out to England HQ most recently against Japan in 2024 and regular days out to Ashton Gate to watch our beloved Bristol Bears!

My introduction to rugby was at school aged 7 but my rugby story start like most front rowers properly at 15. After a short stint there i jumped forward as much as I could to play Hooker and then ended up as a Flanker.

I played junior rugby at Gosport and Fareham until I went to play Colts at Portsmouth and made my senior debut for playing for their 3rds.

I then was lucky enough to play for a Welsh Team Dunvant RFC which was a massive honour and eye opener.

On moving back to Pompey after a season I rejoined Portsmouth becoming a member of their 1st squad and helping the club reach their highest league in the clubs history.

I have retired and come back more times then Joe Marler playing again for Gosport and Portsmouth vets.

    Now a very happy spectator
